Denamarin is a nutritional supplement that provides support to the liver. The liver may need supporting when there is disease of the liver, when administering medications that can damage the liver or in any other situation where increased pressure is placed upon the liver.
S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) is an ingredient in Denamarin that increases levels of the major antioxidant glutathione. Glutathione reduces the damage caused by free radicals in the liver.
can increase liver levels of glutathione, important for liver health formed from the metabolisation of SAMe. The SAMe in Denamarin can also protect liver cells and may help cell repair and regeneration.
Silybin is the most active flavanoid of silymarin, which is the extract from the milk thistle plant (Silybum marianum). Silymarin is normally poorly absorbed from the intestine which is why the silybin is combined with phosphatidylcholine to form the SPC complex. SPC is absorbed much better than silymarin alone. Silybin has been shown to increase glutathione levels as well as having anti-inflammatory effects.
The enteric-coated tablets have a blue coating around the outside to protect the SAMe and therefore it is important not to break this coating so tablets cannot be split or crushed. The tablets should be given whole on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after food. The reason for this is that the presence of food can reduce the absorption of SAMe.
Denamarin is a very safe product. There were no adverse effects noted when Denamarin was given at 80x the recommended levels. There have been a small number of reports of SAMe causing vomiting in dogs and humans.
Care should be taken when using Denamarin alongside the pain relief medication tramadol. Please consult your veterinary surgeon before starting Denamarin alongside any medications.
